PrestaShop, an open-source e-commerce solution, has been widely used by web developers in Singapore for over 10 years to create professional eStores. One notable use case involved a real estate company that implemented PrestaShop on their website, enabling clients to add properties to their cart and make payments using electronic methods. This integration allowed the company to achieve numerous sales and streamlined negotiations by allowing clients to quickly pay for a portion of the property digitally. However, the company eventually switched to a simpler system that focused on direct inquiries for available properties.

Another use case involved a consultancy group that recommended PrestaShop for its flexibility and open-source nature, especially when compared to BigCommerce. This solution was chosen as the e-commerce platform for a primary website along with several supplementary ones. Similarly, a company decided to migrate from an outdated Magento installation to PrestaShop due to its ability to meet their needs. Although they faced some challenges related to system complexity and slow performance during the transition, they were able to overcome these obstacles.

Currently, PrestaShop is being utilized by various businesses and organizations for different purposes. For example, it is being used to run an e-commerce website where daily sales are made and products are directly delivered to customers. Additionally, several companies make use of PrestaShop's back office for managing professional customer purchases across different departments. Moreover, small local businesses rely on PrestaShop to adjust and modify bookings. Users have found PrestaShop to be convenient and user-friendly, catering both to hardcore developers and newcomers in the industry.

In another instance, an organization successfully launched an online storefront and sold handmade goods using PrestaShop, taking advantage of its comprehensive functionality. Furthermore, numerous small companies with low-budget requirements have benefitted from PrestaShop's extensive feature set for their e-commerce projects. Lastly, six different websites utilize PrestaShop as the sole e-commerce platform for selling laser-engraved products to both the general public and internal clients.

Overall, PrestaShop has proven to be a powerful e-commerce solution that caters to a wide range of users, from developers seeking customization capabilities to small businesses looking for budget-friendly options.

PayPal Integration: Many users have found the integration of the PayPal button modality with PrestaShop to be extremely helpful. It allows them to complete payments quickly and digitally in just a few seconds, streamlining the transaction process.

Instant Catalog Updates: Reviewers greatly appreciate the ease of performing inventory reviews and modifying the PrestaShop catalog. They can make changes to the catalog and product conditions, which are instantly reflected on their website without any delay.

Digital Invoices: The creation of digital invoices for each client who made an advance payment is highly valued by users. This valuable feature makes it easier to complete property negotiations as customers can easily identify the specific property that was paid for.

Lack of Support: Some users have expressed frustration with the lack of support from PrestaShop. They have mentioned that there is no type of support available to help users learn how to use the service, and when they reached out for help, their requests were never responded to.

Expensive Templates: Several reviewers have found the templates for customizing their store on PrestaShop to be too expensive. While they acknowledge that the templates are attractive, the high prices forced them to settle for a simple design on their website.

Limited Documentation: Many users feel that PrestaShop has very little online documentation compared to other e-commerce platforms. This lack of documentation makes it difficult for them to find answers to their questions and troubleshoot issues effectively.

Users frequently recommend the following approaches for using PrestaShop:

  1. Use the self-hosted version of PrestaShop, especially for individuals with limited technical knowledge.

  2. Consider utilizing 3rd party modules to enhance the functionality of PrestaShop. It is advised to shop around for these modules to find the best fit for specific business needs.

  3. Ensure there is readily available technical support and invest in a 3rd party backup module for rolling back to previous versions if needed.

In addition, users suggest trying the demo shop before committing to ensure it offers all the necessary features. Small businesses and medium-sized e-commerce startups are especially recommended to consider PrestaShop as an affordable solution that caters to their needs. Additionally, having a good server, implementing cache techniques, and utilizing a Content Data Network (CDN) are suggested for improved response times.

We are web developers. We have been using PrestaShop for the past 10 years to implement professional eStores in Singapore. It is elegant to use and very very stable which are the most important factors for a CMS.
  • Stability and security
  • User friendliness
  • Open-source with options for add-on modules
  • More reports
  • More features for service bookings or event registrations
This is a great system for small and medium businesses dealing from 1 product to 100,000 products. It is elegant to use and very stable.

The system may not be great for converting into a marketplace and the handling of > 1million products.
The system is also not suitable for services selling like events, registrations, subscriptions and ticket bookings etc.

  • The system is FREE, it is a 100% ROI
  • The system is stable so maintenance is easy
  • The add-on modules may be costly but it is one time cost and support is good
As compared to other open-source systems, PrestaShop has the most elegant backend interface. Most of your standard eCommerce features come default: 1. Invoice and Delivery documents in PDF, 2. Promotion and discount mechanism, 3. SEO functionalities, 4. Quick access, 5. Statistics, 6. Categorization, Brands, Attributes, Features/Filters, sorting, pagination, list or grid view.

The next best thing is the stability of versions. Currently, at only ver1.7, this is the only open-source CMS that doesn't require the constant nightmare of updating and breaking the site. The open-source community is still offering modules for ver1.5, 1.6 and 1.7.

If you need modules to enhance the features, it is also a one-time cost since the versions are so stable. The experiences with 3rd party module developers are very good so far. Most modules are from EUR49-100.
This is the best example of "If it's not broken, don't fix it!".
100s of implementation and so far no major security breaches.
Some caching and optimization is definitely needed. However, it is not as bloated as other CMSs with lots of plugins needed.

We are currently using it to run our e-commerce website. Our daily sales are all used via website, which we've designed through PrestaShop. It's being used across our whole organization. We currently don't have a warehouse or physical shop, so all our items are being sold online and delivered to our customers directly. Currently PrestaShop is working exactly as we want it to. There were a few limitations using PrestaShop 1.6, but with the current update to 1.7, we haven't had really any business issues making use of PrestaShop.
  • Quite easy to use compared to other open-source e-commerce software.
  • Has lots of free plugins to help you set up a great basic shop.
  • You can easily create your own unique site.
  • Lots of payment option plugins and you can use them to sell globally.
  • Not a lot of free templates.
  • Images can sometimes be too compressed and lose their full quality, so better settings for that could be introduced.
  • Being able to change the look of your automatic emails via default settings can also be introduced.
Any business looking to sell products online--hardware or software--can make use of PrestaShop. It's more suited to being a product selling platform rather than a service selling one. So if you are in the IT industry, selling computer hardware like central processing units, hard drives, solid state drives, etc., as well as computer software, then use PrestaShop. It's not meant for all industries like selling music--the option to stream the music online before purchasing isn't really going to be as possible on PrestaShop.

  • PrestaShop is a free open-source e-commerce builder, so that is a positive.
  • Lots of free plugins, which is also good.
  • Has lots of SEO tools that are also free to implement.
I've tried other open-source software like PrestaShop, but the others were either more complex, didn't have the right plugins for me to use in my country, or didn't have my preferred look in terms of how I wanted my business to be represented as an e-commerce site. PrestaShop was easy to use and quick to learn. I could input products very easily and it operated close to what I wanted.

We were recommended PrestaShop by a consultancy group that helped us with some BigCommerce customization. PrestaShop is an open source software and we thought we'd have more leeway in modification than we have with BigCommerce. We chose PrestaShop to serve as our e-commerce platform for our primary website and several supplementary websites.
  • PrestaShop is Open Source
  • I could see no other benefit using Prestashop
  • PrestaShop has very little online documentation compared to other e-commerce platforms
  • PrestaShop's answer to everything is, "oh, there's a module for that" Cha-ching
  • PrestaShop is not very intuitive and the back end is clumsy to work with
I will admit we've been spoiled by using BigCommerce for years and prior to that, Magento. Moving over to PrestaShop has been a nightmare compared to those two solid e-commerce solutions. True, with PrestaShop, it's been easier for our developers to API to our ERP, but overall, from a user perspective, I would not recommend PrestaShop for any business solution.

  • If you don't have open source developers on staff it will be costly.
  • The out-of-the box solution is not really a solution. Be prepared to hunt down modules to do standard things you'll want to do.
  • The interface is unlike the e-commerce usual. There will be a learning curve and don't count on online documentation.
It's a no-brainer for e-commerce stores. BigCommerce and Magento both far out-distanced PrestaShop in every major category. If you're just getting into e-commerce, I would highly recommend either BigCommerce or Magento. Their online documentation and support far outweigh any advantages you'd have over going with an open source software like PrestaShop.

Last year we started the process to move from an outdated Magento installation to a new e-commerce platform. After reviewing several systems, we found PrestaShop met our needs best and started the migration process. During the configuration process we noticed that the system can get very complex and especially the slow performance caused us a lot of headaches. In due time we had to upgrade our server resources to a least be able to work with the system without running into Ajax issues. Another very annoying problem are random white screens, especially in the admin area.

  • Very flexible product configuration
  • Clear and well structured workflow with customer management and emails
  • Very slow. Google complains about loading times, means the ranking will be bad!
  • Very unstable--loading a module can crash the back office. Hard to restore--even a full restore sometimes won't work.
  • Needs mostly additional modules, which are not free
  • Display module positions are template dependent. Once a template is changed, Prestashop does not remember the old settings. For updates it's recommended to change to the default template--this means all customization done on our template is gone.
  • Weak reporting
Only OK if used in a managed installation. Don't touch it otherwise. Waste of time and resources.

  • Due to the lack of performance, SEO was never good
  • ROI currently negative due to high amount of time spent to keep it running
  • We now have to decide on another system, as we can't run Prestashop in the future--double the effort and cost!
Magento (open source): very technical and complicated to install and configure
OpenCart: Easy to install, very fast, lacks in functionality--needs extra modules
WooCommerce: OK, but runs on top of WordPress, product configurations very simple - missing out on complex product variants

The lack of performance and the unstable system make it very hard to use it for a serious e-commerce application.

Since we use PrestaShop OpenSource there is only community support. What we found is that many other users fight with the same problems and there seems no solution or input from the PrestaShop developers' side.

Managing back end of the e-commerce platform.
1
Must have solid web server experience, with PHP, MySQL, and backup/restore procedures.
  • Online shopping platform
Considering the problems we had and still have, 0.

Yes
Magento V 1.5x, which was EOL.
  • Price
  • Product Features
  • Product Usability
OpenSource with a good user base. Must have required options for product complexity and shipping.
System stability and performance will be the new lead factors. If some functions are not there, we will have to work around. But if the system itself is not stable, it does not help.

PrestaShop is a powerful and open-source free e-commerce solution. It is a great tool for building online shopping cart websites. PrestaShop is self-hosted meaning you need to have a hosting plan and some technical and coding knowledge to set it up. Customizing PrestaShop can get a little bit tricky especially if you need custom functionalities although there are plenty of third-party extensions and add-ons that you can implement into the platform.
  • Free and open-source.
  • Highly customizable with some coding knowledge.
  • Tons of add-ons and third party extensions.
  • Self hosted, full control on server files.
  • Add-ons can get really expensive.
  • Add-ons can interfere with each other and bugs may arise.
  • Speed need to be improved.
Being a self-hosted solution, it is well suited for people who have a minimum of technical and coding knowledge. If you have no technical skills, you may need to go with other options that are hosted. Also, if you are not willing to invest in customizations and add-ons, PrestaShop would not be the best option to go with.

  • Selling products and services online.
  • Online products management.
I often built websites for businesses and friends and I am experienced with different platforms out there. Some of my customers sometimes prefer one e-commerce solution over the other because it have some functionalities that they may be interested in, like shipping or payment methods. In my opinion PrestaShop has many shipping and payment gateways that are not found with other e-commerce solutions.
